We were so excited to review the "Who Am I?" series from Apologia in our homeschool. Apologia was incredibly generous and sent us not only the hardcover text ($39), but also the Notebooking Journal ($24), the Coloring Book ($8) and the Audio CD ($19). I was blown away by the quality when I opened the package. The text is full-color and gorgeous and the notebooking journal is also full-color. "Who am I?" is the second in the What We Believe apologetics/worldview course being published by Apologia.
From the website "The second book in the What We Believe series, Who Am I? (And What Am I Doing Here?) helps children understand what it means to be fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of the Most High God. This study will enable students to develop a healthy self-image based on these biblical truths: God made me in His image and crowned me with glory; He has given me special gifts and a unique purpose in life; I can creatively express God's love; I am meant to think about beautiful and praiseworthy things, especially God and His Word; I must make decisions based on God's truth; I can always know the wise thing to do; I must cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in my life; I am a beloved child of God whose true identity is found in Christ."
The hardcover text contains 8 lessons:
- Lesson 1: What Are We Doing Here?
- Lesson 2: What Will You Make Today?
- Lesson 3: What's On Your Mind?
- Lesson 4: Can You Trust Your Feelings?
- Lesson 5: Will You Choose Wisely?
- Lesson 6: How Will You Run The Race?
- Lesson 7: What Kind Of Fruit Are You Growing?
- Lesson 8: Who Do You Think You Are?
These 8 lessons each have about 16 different sections to work through.
There is a thorough introduction that helps the parents navigate through the materials and gives a sample lesson plan on how to work through the book. Each lesson is set up to take about 3 weeks working 2 times a week, which we found about right in our home. There is a materials list included for those activities that might require more than just the notebook. They are mostly all easily obtainable household items.
The notebooking journal is gorgeous as well. It is 248 pages with stunning graphics, activities like word searches, mini-books and areas to write prayers, bible verses and thoughts about the lessons. My daughter has recently discovered "Smash" notebooks and she quickly discovered this could be her own Bible "smash" book to write her thoughts and discoveries in. There are writing prompts as well as areas for the student to just draw or write their own creations that are inspired by the lessons.
I was so excited to receive the Audio Selection so we could listen in the car or the kids could listen during quiet time throughout the week. Unfortunately, each track has an intro with copyright information, so it makes it really choppy to listen to. It would be perfect if they would have eliminated the copyright information on each track.
Miss Paya was so excited to receive something that she could do as we worked through the book. The coloring book (64 pages) is beautifully done with gorgeous illustrations depicting the different lessons. I am going to have to order another one for Mr. Fix-It.
We only made it through the first Lesson and a half during the time that we have had this curriculum, but I have been extremely pleased with the content so far. We are Sabbath Keepers and keep the Old Testament Holy Days and so far there hasn't been anything that was completely out of line with our thoughts and if there has been little tings, I have been able to explain it easily. You can see Apologia's mission and statement of faith on their website to determine if it would be in line with your families beliefs.
